Concert (online): Johnny Harper and Elly Wininger

A couple of musicians with amazing guitars

Join us via Zoom an FSGW Sunday evening get-together featuring a couple of musicians driven by spellbinding guitar playing in divergent folk styles. If you came to the FSGW virtual Getaway last October, you may already be familiar with them, but if not, you’ll be glad when we introduce you to them!

Johnny Harper < https://www.johnnyharper.net/ > is a singer, guitarist, songwriter, bandleader, arranger, and producer of recordings and concerts, well-known in the San Francisco Bay area, and to us East Coasters who know him through the FSGW Getaway or other virtual song circles. Johnny is a powerful solo performer, accompanying himself in complex lead/rhythm and finger-picking styles on electric and acoustic guitars.  His songwriting reflects his deep roots in American folk-roots idioms – blues, soul, gospel, New Orleans, rock’n’roll, vintage country, traditional folk music, and more. He has lead rockin’ bands specializing in the New Orleans R&B sound and played guitar behind many folks, including Maria Muldaur, Barbara Dane, Queen Ida, and Michael Doucet, among others.

Elly Wininger <https://www.ellywininger.com> fell in love with the blues when, even before she could read or write, she listened to her parents’ 78 rpm vinyl recordings of folks like Blind Willie Johnson, Leadbelly, or Vera Ward Hall. Growing up, she hung out with blues musicians when they came to Greenwich Village in New York. She got good at it—so good that she was inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame in 2014. She writes great songs, teaches guitar, coaches other performers, produces and hosts radio shows, and produces albums for other artists. But she really shines when performing on her own.

Each of them will have a chance to play off the ideas and performances of the other. Expect an evening of fine music and guitar work.

Register by clicking on the registration button, and we'll give you the Zoom link.

Cost to register: free; Suggested donation: $20 per listener. (If you feel generous and can afford it, a higher amount will help support the performers.)
