Donna Ray Norton and Melanie Rice Penland return by popular demand after appearing as distinguished guest artists at the 2018 FSGW Getaway. Donna is an eighth-generation ballad singer from Sodom Laurel, NC; her ancestors include Dellie Norton, Morris Norton, Byard Ray, and Lena Jean Ray. She received the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Youth Award for Balladry in 2005. Melanie is the daughter of National Heritage Fellow Sheila Kay Adams and granddaughter of Joe Penland, who performed for FSGW last fall in a concert recorded live at Charlie Pilzer’s Allyworld. Together, they carry the tradition of southern Appalachian story songs taught from elders to youth one-on-one, “knee to knee.”

At Seekers Church, 276 Carroll St. NW, Washington, DC 20012 (Metro: Takoma). $20; members $10.
