Concert & Dance on Capitol Hill, Saturday, May 14
7:30 concert, 9:00 dance party
Petar Ralchev is one of the masters of Eastern European instrumental folk and folk-jazz music. He and his Quartet will entertain us with a one hour concert of traditional ? yet progressive and improvisational ? Bulgarian folk music, with surprise excursions into other Balkan and European genres. The concert will be followed by a reception and folk dance with live music by the band. Music and dance requests will be welcome.
The accordionist is leading a six-week coast-to-coast tour across the U.S. and Canada. His virtuoso ensemble includes Nikolay Georgiev (guitar), Iliana Marudova-Georgiev (vocal), and Petur Iliev (tupan, drum). All are young Bulgarian artists who combine the old village traditions of their home country with their experience from the Musical Academy in Plovdiv, the Shiroka Luka folklore arts school, and the Philip Koutev state ensemble.
Petar Ralchev himself is legendary, on the Eastern European music scene for over 30 years and famous for his unique style, extraordinary technical virtuosity, and wide range of influences. Additionally, he has worked internationally in a number of multi-ethnic European bands, from klezmer to jazz to new wave, and has worked with a who?s who of world music titans.
