A Traditional Piper

Dick Hensold makes his living as a piper. Really. Not the loud pipes -- the quiet ones. He is the leading Northumbrian smallpiper in North America and has performed and taught in the UK, Japan, Canada and across this country.

The concert will feature Hensold on Northumbrian smallpipes (that quiet bagpipe from Northeast England), reeljefl?yteel pipes (an indoor version of Scottish Highland pipes intended for Scottish dance music), seljevlote (Norwegian willow-flute), s?ckpipa (Swedish bagpipes), pibgorn (Welsh hornpipe), and other instruments. He will play music in several traditional and historical styles, with particular emphasis on Cape Breton, early Scottish, and Northumbrian music, but also including medieval, Irish, Scandinavian and original music. The program also includes a couple of songs, neither of them in English, and a limited amount of dancing while seated.

You?re sure to be charmed by the sounds, the stories, the diversity. Sample the sounds at http://dickhensold.com/instruments.html. The concert will be held in the Ritchie Building, 531 Dale Drive. For parking, look for open spaces in the Silver Spring International Middle School lot, corner of Dale and Wayne. General admission is $20, $15 FSGW members and Revels regulars, $10 students.
