Cockney, Whalerman, Australian, Laborer and More Danny Spooner is one of our favorite impossible to categorize people?not that he crosses genres, but that he operates with authenticity in so many of them. Born in London, the lad learned English songs of all sorts (traditional, contemporary, and music hall). As a young apprectice on the Thames estuary he learned more from his singing captain, then worked on tugs, fishing boats, and a British whaler in the Southern hemisphere. He settled in Australia during the folk revival of the 1960s, rapidly learning both traditional Australian songs and the finest songs of contemporary Australian writers. He?s been involved with labor issues and studied them, and he?s taught in universites and schools. Add to that broad set of repertoires an ability to sing with conviction, a great baritone voice, and even a bit of concertina playing. He doesn?t get here often enough, and he?s getting up in years, so he?s not sure if this isn?t your last opportunity to spend time with him. Danny Spooner is a musical treasure not to be missed.
