Keep on Kipling, with Ken Schatz and Heather Wood (Monthly Program)
When
16 Feb 2008
8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Location
Washington Ethical Society, Washington, DC
Ken Schatz and Heather Wood present an evening of the songs of Rudyard Kipling, with some digressions into his poetry and general view of life. As Peter Bellamy said (and titled an album), "Rudyard Kipling Made Exceedingly Good Songs."Rudyard Kipling (currently dead) was the world's youngest winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. He was born in India and lived in England and Vermont. He visited Washington, DC, and loved the Smithsonian, which he toured with Theodore Roosevelt, but that was back in the days of the second Grover Cleveland administration.Ken Schatz, wwho was born in D.C., sings and arranges traditional and roots music--sea songs and chanteys, gospel, blues, ballads, and worksongs. He has been known to sing (for FSGW even!) solo and as part of The NexTradition. He is well-known in New York as an actor and acting coach and calls his new theatre company "Pook's Hill."Heather Wood first sang in Washington in 1968 (40 years ago--doesn't time fly when you're having fun?) as a member of the Young Tradition, with the aforementioned Peter Bellamy (now, alas, also currently dead) plus Royston Wood (ditto, no relation). Born in England, she's been involved in folk music since the dear departed Sixties. She writes--songs, articles, books--and edits for others (and added many proofreader's corrections before signing the application to become an American citizen). This show is the FSGWs first return to the newly renovated Washington Ethical Society (which FSGW first used in 1968)--our old favorite building has been completely redone and made handicapped accessible. Come check out the fairly old new place while listening to some fairly new old songs. There will be a brief FSGW membership meeting at the conclusion of the intermission, where we will take nominations from the floor for election to serve on the 2008-2009 FSGW Board of Directors.
