Irish Music LegendsKevin Burke and his highly fluid and ornamented Sligo-style of fiddle is easily one of the most recognizable talents in Irish music today. From his early days with the ground-breaking and now legendary Bothy Band in the mid-70s to his tours with the Irish supergroup Patrick Street and the Celtic Fiddle Festival, Kevin Burke is widely respected as both an ensemble player and a dynamic solo performer. In 2002, he was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts for his artistic excellence and contributions to the field. Multi-instrumentalist Cal Scott has been playing a variety of music for years, everything from folk to jazz, on bass, brass and guitar, to name a few. He has honed that musicianship into a career as a composer, arranger and producer. This is a duo of incredible musical depth. The duo met while Cal was working a score for a documentary on Northern Ireland. Their new CD Across the Black River is a collaboration incorporating their new compositions, traditional Irish music and even a bluegrass classic. Kevin Burke is no stranger to FSGW events, although it has been way too long since we have had him in concert. About 20 years ago, Kevin played for a Sunday night contra dance at the Takoma Park Middle School. The place was overflowing with dancers and others who relished the opportunity to hear this master up close. Kevin's bands led the charge of young, fervent, Ireland-born Celtoids reshaping the landscape of what has come to be known as contemporary Irish music. Cal Scott has also made his mark as a fabulous Celtic style guitar player and composer. When you hear Cal's playing, you will understand why this duo is once more causing a sensation amongst the Celtic musicians and followers of traditional Irish music. Kevin and Cal will be joined by special guests Jordan Dudney and dancers from the Dudney School of Irish Dance. Jordan has performed with the Eileen Ivers Band, Mick Moloney, and Cherish the Ladies. The concert is FREE for FSGW Members; $17 for the general public.Note the early 7:30 p.m. start time.Fiddle Workshop with Kevin BurkeSunday, May 13 * 3:00 pmThis workshop is for intermediate to advanced players.
