Hoag, Kelley, Pilzer--A Concert & Dance (Special Event)

  • 07 Apr 2007
  • 7:30 PM - 10:30 PM
  • Great Falls Grange, Great Falls, VA
A Scandiavian music concert and dance with Andrea Hoag, Loretta Kelley, and Charlie Pilzer; a celebration of talented performers from our community. They live, work, teach and perform locally (as well as nationally and internationally!) They are members of FSGW, and Charlie Pilzer was recently Program Chair.. Their CD, Hambo in the Snow, was nominated in the Best Traditional World Music Album category for the 49th Annual GRAMMY? Awards. So, what happens when you put together one of the finest American-born Swedish fiddlers with one of the finest American-born Norwegian fiddlers and add a guy who has traveled the northern countries of the world playing Scandinavian music with a multi-national band? You get music that is anything but ordinary. Strings. Vibrating strings. Lots of them. One fiddle, one hardingfele, and one contrabass. Rich deep fundamental notes and ethereal haunting overtones. The scales twist your ears and the rhythm has a life of its of its own. From the tale of its origin to the names of the players who passed it along, each tune speaks of a land and a tradition.None of this explains the raw life that fills the room when Andrea, Loretta and Charlie play. Perhaps it is the decades of experience and passion that each musician brings. Or maybe it is that they are playing music that fills their souls to overflowing. We'll start with a concert, and then after an hour, we'll push back the chairs to the wall since a lot of this music was MADE for dancing! . Linda Brooks and Ross Schipper from Scandia DC will lead the dancing, Many of the dances will be simple dances and mixers accessible to all, including generally known dances such as the schottische, waltz, hambo and polka. A few will be more advanced dances including a set of springar and gangar by Loretta on the hardingfele. But, even if you choose not to dance, the music is well worth listening to for its own sake. We'll have seats available for those who want to just listen.Advanced Tickets:Because the capacity of the Great Falls Grange is strictly limited by fire-code regulations, we're offering a chance to get advanced tickets.
