Old Time Banjo and FiddleWorkshops and a concertWalt Koken is a 5-string banjo-ist and former old-time fiddler in the Fat City String Band and Highwoods Stringband, and Clare Milliner is a fiddle player and collector of traditional American fiddle tunes.Walt Koken, born in Missouri, has played banjo and fiddle on four continents and is looking forward to future adventures. He is probably best known for his fiddling with the Highwoods Stringband in the 1970s, successor to the Fat City String Band from the San Francisco Bay area. He has made two solo banjo CDs for Rounder Records and one on his own Mudthumper label, all with his old Orpheum banjo. In recent years, he and Clare have been playing dances, festivals, and with friends in local sessions.Clare Milliner, a life-long resident of Chester County, Pennsylvania, has played violin since she was eight years old. She has spent quite some time collecting and annotating fiddle tunes, and is collaborating with Walt to publish a book of over 1300 of them. She and Walt recently released a CD on Mudthumper of banjo-fiddle duets, ?Just Tunes.? For the past fifteen years, she has played for dances and concerts with friends who call themselves ?The Cacklin? Hens and Roosters Too.?This concert is at the home of Doria Howe and Michael Stein, in the Dupont Circle area of Washington, DC, and will be preceded by afternoon fiddle and banjo workshops with Walt and Claire and a pot-luck supper.
