Since 1986, Castlebay has been weaving together Maine's nautical and British Isles legacies, transporting their audience through time and across the Atlantic. Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee blend history, legend, and experience into their personable performances. Seasoned with heritage and humor, Castlebay’s winter program features both colonial and contemporary music, poetry, and stories of winter in New England. Songs and traditional tunes accompanied by guitar, Celtic harp, fiddle, and woodwinds lift the spirit and warm the heart.
The winter holiday traditions in New England are steeped in inspiration from the old country while reveling in the beauty and spirit of the New World. Amidst the hardship of dealing with snow and ice or providing daily food and warmth, people enjoy the artistry of Nature--brilliant crystalline days and crisp, cold, starlit nights, the moon on the snow, sea smoke suspended over the frozen ocean. A crackling wood fire warms ruddy-cheeked family and friends gathered after a day of fun in the snow. Mingled with the scent of fragrant fir boughs is the taste of cider or hot chocolate, and music fills the room as the fiddler plays. A simple white clapboarded church lit with candles awaits grateful worshipers who travel along dark country roads to renew their faith with song and story.
