First Friday in Alexandria

Lilt takes the limelight at Emma's Espresso and Wine Bar in the Del Ray community of Alexandria, Va., on March 4 for FSGW's monthly First Friday concert series, a new offering closer to home for FSGW folks in northern Virginia.

Tina Eck (flute and tin whistle) and Keith Carr (bouzouki and banjo) play the traditional dance music of Ireland--jigs, reels, hornpipes--spiced with the occasional slow air or vocal number. They have been performing together since 2009, frequent players in the local Irish scene, where their first CD "Lilt ? (released in 2010) became a surprise hit. Since then they've produced two more albums: "Onward ? in 2011 and "Little Falls ? in December 2013. (Individually Carr is a part of The Love Mongrels; Eck plays with the Flaming Shillelaghs , among others.)

The duo is a multiple nominee for the Wammie Awards (2012-2015). They have appeared in concert throughout the eastern US, with performances at such notable venues as The Embassy of Ireland, The Kennedy Center, The Birchmere, The Institute of Musical Traditions, The Old Brogue Celtic Concert Series, the Washington Conservatory of Music, the Swift Run Celtic Concert Series, and numerous music festivals.

Emma's Espresso and Wine Bar is located at 106 Hume Ave. in Alexandria. Menu features hearty sandwiches and salads; beer and wine. The First Friday concerts run from 6:30-8:30 pm. $15 donation is requested.
