Sunset Square Dance in Rock Creek Park!

  • 23 Jul 2016
  • 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM
  • Peirce Mill, Washington, DC
The Friends of Peirce Mill & the DC Square Dance Collective are joining forces to bring you an evening of outdoor music & dancing in Rock Creek Park! On Saturday, July 23rd we'll fill the meadows and grounds of Peirce Mill with some sweet old-time string-band music and southern square dances. Bring a picnic, a blanket, croquet or bocce and stay & dance 'til the stars come out ✩★✰

These righteous gentlemen will play the tunes: Aaron Olwell (fiddle), Brent Feito (banjo), Lucas Chohany (guitar) and Danny Stewart (bass). Our own Bradley Kennedy and Janine Smith will call the figures.

Peirce Mill is the last remaining 19th-century gristmill in DC, one of several that used to grind the wheat, oats, and corn for our city using waterpower from Rock Creek. It's been lovingly restored and will be open late into the evening so you can see how it all went down. Back in the day, the mill was also known to host dances, though we'll be dancing outside on the grass for this particular occasion.

This dance is FREE! As always, no lesson, experience, or partner needed. Everyone is welcome. We'll have a donation bucket - please chip in if you're able. This dance is sponsored by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington, and supported by a grant from the National Environmental Education Foundation / Toyota USA.

In case of heavy rain the dance will have to be cancelled. Check back here for rain related updates.
