The Horse Flies with caller Nils Fredland!

The DC Square Dance Collective is celebrating our First Anniversary! Way back in 2011, a few friends got together with the suspicion that you all might enjoy some square dancing in the District. Nine wildly successful dances later, by golly, DC has become the biggest square dance scene in the nation. Thanks to all of the dancers, musicians, callers, pew-movers, and organizers who have made it possible!

This calls for celebration, and to do this party right, we're bringing none other than legendary band THE HORSE FLIES to come and play for you. Yep, the Horse Flies, from Ithaca NY - all six of them. These folks are masterful musicians with roots in old-time music and we dare say they are gonna knock your socks off. And if that weren't enough, NILS FREDLAND - one of the most sought after dance callers around today - is coming all the way down from New Hampshire to call. We are not kidding, this is going to be E-P-I-C!

Admission is still just $5, because we love you. No partner, experience, or costume needed. All the dances will be taught and called, so you can learn everything you need to know on the spot!

Directions: we recommend taking the Metro to Columbia Heights. Folks driving in can usually find street parking, or there is a parking garage on Park Rd just west of 14th St, under the big shopping mall.

A longtime favorite of critics and fans, but a pigeonholer's nightmare, The Horse Flies explore the intersection of the traditional and the modern to create a musical world all their own. Decades ago they began with traditional American fiddle music, now interwoven with ethnic percussion and a trance-inducing minimalism. The result is a fierce, percolating, danceable groove.
